Metro Denver chasing 80 other corporate prospects besides Amazon

Even if metro Denver comes up short in its effort to be home to Amazon’s second headquarters, the research, collaboration and soul-searching that were required won’t be a wasted effort, one of the people most familiar with the proposal said.

“Whether Amazon chooses Colorado or not, this process has been helpful to our community,” J.J. Ament, the CEO of the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp., told attendees of the 35th annual Demography Summit, which the Colorado Department of Local Affairs hosted in Brighton on Friday.

Amazon’s request for proposals, unusual because of how public and open it was, resulted in articles around the globe highlighting metro Denver’s status as a top candidate in a list of 238 contenders seeking the 50,000 highly paid jobs offered as the prize. Having to craft the proposal helped state and local officials get a better sense of strengths and weaknesses, which should help them push for investments and reforms that will allow the region to up its game.
